Getting Around Catalina: Do I Need a Car?

If you’re planning a trip to Catalina Island, one of the first questions you might ask is, “Do I need a car?” There are many transportation options beyond a car, but many activities are within reasonable walking distance of each other as well—and that’s part of what makes visiting Catalina such a unique and relaxing experience.

Catalina Island operates a little differently than the mainland. The island’s primary town, Avalon, is compact, pedestrian-friendly, and intentionally limits personal vehicles. In fact, there’s a decades-long waiting list for residents to get permission to own a private car. This means that for most visitors, you’ll be getting around without a car—which can actually be a great benefit.

Explore Avalon by Foot, Golf Cart, or Bike

Avalon is less than one square mile in size, making it incredibly easy to explore on foot. You can walk from the ferry terminal to your hotel, restaurants, beaches, shops, and most attractions in just minutes.

For a little more flexibility and fun, golf cart rentals are one of the most popular ways to get around. You can rent a cart by the hour and cruise up to scenic overlooks, the Wrigley Memorial, or around town. It’s a great option for families or couples who want a relaxing, self-guided tour of Avalon.

Electric bikes and traditional bicycles are also available for rent and are perfect for active travelers who want to explore at their own pace.

Getting to Two Harbors or the Interior

If your weekend escape or journey takes you beyond Avalon to Two Harbors, you won’t be driving yourself there either. You can take the Cyclone Power Boat (seasonal, May through October), or arrange for private shuttle transportation. Guided tours and shuttle services also reach remote hiking trails and scenic spots in Catalina’s rugged interior.

What About Taxis or Shuttles?

Avalon has taxis and hotel shuttles to help you with luggage or get you to places a bit farther out of town. Most hotels offer courtesy transportation from the ferry terminal, so check in advance.

See the Island from the Sky

One of the most unforgettable ways to see Catalina is from above. If you’re not getting around by foot or cart, consider taking in panoramic views with Catalina Xtreme Parasail. This parasaling experience lets you soar above Avalon and the sparkling Pacific—a perfect way to see the island without wheels!

No Car, No Problem

Ultimately, not needing a car is one of the island’s best features. It encourages a slower pace, more scenic exploration, and a more relaxing experience. So leave the keys behind, and enjoy Catalina Island the way it was meant to be experienced—on foot, by cart, or soaring through the sky.
