Here, we’ve provided a guide on how to get from Los Angeles to Catalina Island, ensuring your journey is as seamless as possible.

Getting to Catalina Island from Los Angeles

Step 1: Choose Your Departure Point

The three departure points for the Catalina Island ferry are Long Beach, San Pedro, and Dana Point. Dana Point is best for Orange County visitors. If you’re coming from LA, either Long Beach or San Pedro will be closest, and you’ll probably want to pick your port based on ferry departure schedules.

Step 2: Book Your Ferry Ride

Catalina Island is only accessible by ferry. The Catalina Express offers daily service to Avalon, the island’s only incorporated town. The ferry ride takes approximately an hour, and you’ll enjoy scenic views of the ocean along the way. Be sure to book your tickets in advance, especially during peak travel seasons.

Step 3: Parking and Boarding

To get to the docks, take the Harbor Freeway (the 110) south from downtown Los Angeles. You’ll want to get up early and give yourself plenty of time, since most ferries leave in the morning and it can take up to an hour to make your way through traffic.

Both the Long Beach and San Pedro terminals offer secure parking for a daily fee. Once parked, head to the Catalina Express terminal to check in and board your ferry. Arrive at least 30 minutes before your scheduled departure to ensure a smooth boarding process.

Step 4: Arriving on Catalina Island

Upon arrival in Avalon, you’ll be just a short walk away from our parasailing location. Enjoy the waterfront along the way and if you’re with a special someone, take some romantic quality time - Catalina is known as the Island of Romance!
